FAA Medical Exams

HIMS stands for Human interventional Motivational Study. A program assisting airmen who perhaps may otherwise not qualify to fly.  A subset of AME physicians provide this specific service assisting pilots with the following items:

• Alcohol and drug related issues

• Depression and anxiety with use of SSRI     

• Deprssion/anxiety without SSRI

• PTSD

• ADD/ADHD

• HIV

Yes you can fly with above conditions.  However, the FAA has established  regulatory guidelines to obtain a medical certification.

Before 2003 it was determined that any of these cases were immediately disqualifying and the loss of a medical certificate and thus the end of a flying career for some pilots or aspiring pilots.
